How to bore sight a rifle?

After mounting a rifle scope, if you start firing at target instantly, it is highly unlikely that you will hit the target. It is due to cross hair of the scope is not aligned with the bore of the rifle. That is bore sighting come into play. It is the process of aligning bore of the rifle to cross hair of the optics. If you do not bore sight your rifle, you will miss all of target. Let’s now know how to bore sight a rifle.

You will find many good blog posts have been written regarding the topic. But they have not clearly described the process. However, I found one that is pretty useful. They described every step precisely. Below I have summarized their process for your conveniences.

Step 1:

Mount the scope onto the rifle

Detach the bolt from the rifle.

Step 3:

Place the rifle behind a stable platform at your chest or eye level so that you can look down the barrel comfortably. You can tied down a pile of firewood stick and use it as a background. You can also use any available things like table top or log as a support.

Step 4:

Select an object as a target that you can see through the riffle barrel while the riffle is resting on the support. The object can be a cold drinks can, a cross mark on a tree. The distance between you and target could be as far as 100 yards away.

Step 4:

Adjust the rifle position by looking through the barrel. Move the rifle right or left, up and down to bring the object in the center of your field of view. Fix the rifle in that position.

Step 5:

It now time to align the scope. To do that, see through the scope. It is highly unlikely that cross hair of scope will be aligned with the target.

Step 6:

Separate the turret caps from the rifle scope. Align the cross hair of scopes with the target by adjusting windage.

Reattach the turret caps and bolt.

Your rifle is bore sighted now. It is now ready to go. When you aim a game or a target with the help of scopes cross hair, you will not miss the target.
